Only Tough Competition Will Keep Nwabali on His Toes – Ex-Nigeria Goalkeeper Aikhuomogbe Urges NFF to Strengthen Goalkeeping Department

In an exclusive interview with Rasheed Adewuyi in New York, Aikhuomogbe urges NFF to revamp goalkeeping department with experienced trainers and backs Okoye to bounce back after betting ban

Former Nigeria international goalkeeper Andrew Aikhuomogbe has emphasized the need for increased competition within the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping ranks to maintain high performance levels. In an exclusive interview with JerseyNumber12, Aikhuomogbe highlighted that current first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali would benefit from having strong contenders vying for the number one spot.

“During my time, you had to be the best to earn the nod between the sticks because of the intense competition among goalkeepers at both club and national levels,” Aikhuomogbe recalled.

He advocated for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to appoint former goalkeepers as trainers, believing they possess the experience and insight to guide current players effectively. “The NFF should ensure that all trainers are former goalkeepers capable of leading their wards on the right path, just as our trainers did during our era,” he stated.

Addressing the situation of Maduka Okoye, who recently returned to action after a two-month suspension for betting irregularities, Aikhuomogbe expressed confidence in Okoye’s ability to rebound. “I think Okoye should put his problems behind him and focus on his career. Everyone faces challenges in life; he should return with full determination to fight for the Super Eagles’ number one position,” he advised.

Okoye’s suspension, which began on August 18, 2025, concluded on October 19, 2025. He has since resumed training with Udinese and made his first appearance of the season in late October.

Aikhuomogbe’s insights come amid discussions about Nwabali’s recent performances, where he has faced criticism for costly mistakes and temperamental behavior during Nigeria’s 2025 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. The former goalkeeper’s comments underscore the importance of fostering healthy competition and experienced mentorship within the national team’s goalkeeping department.
