Esther Okoronkwo inspired AFC Toronto to a dramatic 3–2 comeback victory over Vancouver Rise FC in the opening match of the Northern Super League season at Swangard Stadium.
The reigning champions started strongly, with María Camila Reyes striking in the 18th minute and Latifah Abdu doubling the lead before halftime to give Vancouver a 2–1 advantage.
Toronto responded after the break with a more aggressive approach, pressing higher and moving the ball quicker through midfield. Okoronkwo, leading the line, proved central to the turnaround, linking play, drawing defenders out of position, and helping create the opening that led to the winning goal.
Her all-round performance helped shift momentum as Toronto scored twice in the second half to seal a statement road win in a rematch of last season’s final.
The result immediately positions AFC Toronto as an early title contender, with Okoronkwo once again underlining her reputation as one of the league’s most decisive attackers.
