Coventry City FC strengthened their grip at the top of the Championship with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Derby County FC, as Frank Onyeka opened the scoring with a stunning first goal for the club.
The win extends Coventry’s lead at the summit to 11 points, underlining their promotion charge in a fiercely contested season.
Coventry made a flying start when Onyeka unleashed a powerful long-range strike in the 12th minute, marking his first goal for the club in spectacular fashion.
The Nigerian midfielder’s effort set the tone for an open and high-tempo encounter. Coventry doubled their advantage through Jack Rudoni, who finished clinically to put the hosts in control.
However, Derby fought back through Ben Brereton Díaz, whose brace brought the visitors level and ensured a tense contest heading into the final stages.
With the match finely poised, Rudoni stepped up again, scoring his second of the night in the 80th minute to restore Coventry’s lead and ultimately secure all three points. Despite late pressure from Derby, Coventry held firm to seal a crucial victory.
Coventry boss Frank Lampard praised his team’s resilience and highlighted Onyeka’s impact after the match: “It was a fantastic team performance. We started the game with real intent, and Frank’s goal gave us that early momentum. You can see what it means to him and the group.”
