‘Prison-Mubarak’ for Senegal Fans as 18 Sentenced to Jail Over AFCON Violence in Morocco

It is prison, rather than celebration, for 18 Senegalese football supporters, some of whom would have been observing the start of the holy month of Ramadan, after a Moroccan court sentenced them to jail over violent incidents linked to the Africa Cup of Nations.

The High Court of Rabat handed down prison terms ranging from three months to one year, following convictions for assault, public disorder, and stadium-related violence. The sentences are immediately enforceable under Moroccan law.

Authorities had launched investigations into the actions of the Senegalese supporters after disturbances erupted during AFCON final match, prompting arrests and prosecution. The court found the supporters guilty of violating laws meant to ensure fan safety and public order.

Back home in Senegal, families reportedly expressed shock at the verdict, as the start of Ramadan, a month traditionally associated with fasting, reflection, and celebration, became a period of imprisonment for their loved ones.

Moroccan authorities have emphasized that their zero-tolerance approach to football-related violence applies to both domestic and foreign fans, ensuring that stadiums and surrounding areas remain safe during international tournaments.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences football supporters face when involved in violent incidents abroad, even during a sacred period like Ramadan.
