REAL MADRID PUSHING UEFA TO STREAM CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GAMES FREE WORLDWIDE

By Kazeem Ajibola Shoyebo

Real Madrid CF are reportedly in advanced negotiations with UEFA over a groundbreaking proposal that could radically change how European football is broadcast around the world by making UEFA club competitions freely accessible through a single streaming platform.

According to reports from Spanish outlet Voz Pópuli, senior Real Madrid executives are working closely with UEFA officials on a project that would centralize the broadcasting of the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League under one global digital platform supported primarily through advertising revenue rather than traditional subscription models.

The proposal is said to be spearheaded by Anas Laghrari, a close associate and trusted adviser to Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez. Laghrari has reportedly been leading negotiations on behalf of the Spanish giants as discussions with UEFA continue behind the scenes.

Under the proposed system, supporters around the world could potentially watch European club matches free of charge, with integrated advertising and sponsorship packages financing the platform. Advocates of the idea believe the current fragmented television rights structure has become too expensive and restrictive for many supporters globally.

UEFA currently distributes broadcasting rights territory by territory through partnerships with major networks and subscription platforms including TNT Sports, DAZN, Paramount+, Canal+, beIN Sports and Sky Sports.

The existing model generates billions of euros annually for UEFA and participating clubs, but critics argue rising subscription costs and fragmented access have pushed many younger fans away from traditional viewing methods.

The proposed Real Madrid-backed platform would represent one of the biggest commercial revolutions in European football history if approved. Industry observers believe it could mirror the advertising-driven digital strategies used by major technology companies and streaming giants.

Neither UEFA nor Real Madrid has officially confirmed the negotiations publicly, and no final agreement has yet been announced. However, reports suggest talks are progressing positively as football authorities explore new long-term digital broadcasting strategies.

The discussions also arrive amid broader changes in football’s media landscape, with increasing pressure from clubs and fans for more direct-to-consumer streaming solutions and wider accessibility to elite competitions.

Real Madrid have consistently pushed for structural reforms in European football under Florentino Pérez’s leadership, including the controversial European Super League proposal launched in 2021. The latest streaming initiative appears to align with the club’s long-standing belief that football must modernize its commercial and digital approach to remain globally competitive.

If successful, the project could dramatically reshape how fans consume European football and potentially end the era of multiple expensive subscriptions required to follow UEFA competitions.
