Egypt head coach Hosam Hassan has praised his team’s tactical discipline and his unwavering faith in star forward Mohamed Salah after the Pharaohs secured a gritty 1–0 win over South Africa in Friday’s Group B clash at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Speaking to journalists after the match, Hassan commended his players for sticking to the game plan despite being reduced to 10 men late in the first half. Mohamed Salah’s decisive goal ultimately proved the difference in a tense encounter that saw Egypt become the first team to qualify for the knockout stage of AFCON 2025.
“We played the game as a final,” Hassan stated. “The players gave their best despite being reduced to 10 men. South Africa is a very strong opponent, and we respect every team, but we go into every match aiming for all three points.”
The turning point came just before halftime when right-back Mohamed Hany received a second yellow card for a rash challenge on Teboho Mokoena, leaving Egypt to battle with a numerical disadvantage.
Despite the setback, the Pharaohs held firm, with Salah stepping up to score the only goal of the match and seal a vital win.
Hassan was quick to highlight Salah’s importance to the team, saying, “I had faith in Mohamed Salah. I knew he would make the difference. He’s of great importance to this team, especially in moments like this.”
The Egyptian boss also praised the collective effort of his squad, refusing to single out any individual. “Mohamed Salah was crucial, but all the players were the best today. They fought for the result. I thank the fans for their incredible support.”
Hassan further admitted that South Africa’s tactical setup made the match especially tough, noting that Bafana Bafana’s style mirrored that of several Egyptian clubs, allowing them to prepare effectively for the contest.
With this result, Egypt sits top of Group B with six points from two matches, securing early passage to the round of 16. The victory not only underlines Egypt’s status as tournament contenders but also marks a significant personal milestone for Hassan, who is managing his first major tournament as Egypt’s head coach.
The Pharaohs will face Angola in their final group match, while South Africa now face a must-win situation against Zimbabwe in their next outing to keep their AFCON hopes alive.
