Senegal Parade AFCON Trophy Amid CAF Dispute Before Peru Friendly

By Kazeem Ajibola Shoyebo

The Senegal national football team publicly displayed the Africa Cup of Nations trophy ahead of their international friendly against Peru national football team, in a symbolic show of defiance amid an ongoing dispute with Confederation of African Football over the tournament’s official outcome.

The pre-match ceremony saw Senegalese players parade the trophy they lifted on the pitch, reinforcing their stance following CAF’s controversial decision to overturn the final result weeks after the competition had concluded.

Senegal were initially crowned champions after winning the AFCON final on the field. However, 57 days later, CAF’s appeals process reportedly led to the result being reversed, awarding a 3–0 decision in favor of Morocco national football team.

The decision sparked widespread debate across the football community, with questions raised over both the timing and the procedural handling of the case.

By parading the trophy before their clash with Peru, Senegal sent a clear message — emphasizing their belief in the legitimacy of their on-field achievement despite the administrative ruling.

The gesture resonated strongly with sections of fans and stakeholders, many of whom view the team’s performance in the tournament as the true measure of success.

While CAF’s ruling remains the official position, sentiment among supporters and observers remains divided. Senegal’s decision to showcase the trophy highlights the ongoing tension between regulatory decisions and sporting outcomes.

The Senegalese Football Federation has already taken formal steps to challenge the ruling, escalating the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in a bid to overturn CAF’s decision.
