Senegal Unveil World Cup Squad as Pape Thiaw Backs Youth, Experience for “Group of Death”

Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has named a provisional 28-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, blending experienced stars with emerging young talents as the Lions of Teranga prepare for a daunting group-stage campaign against France, Norway and Iraq.

The West African giants, one of Africa’s strongest hopes for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, must still cut two players before submitting their final squad to FIFA later this month.

Veteran forward Sadio Mané headlines the squad alongside captain Kalidou Koulibaly, goalkeeper Édouard Mendy and Premier League stars Ismaïla Sarr, Iliman Ndiaye and Pape Matar Sarr.

One of the biggest talking points is the inclusion of 18-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder Bara Ndiaye, who only recently broke into Vincent Kompany’s first team after a rapid rise through the German club’s academy system. The teenager made four Bundesliga appearances at the end of the season and is now on the verge of a World Cup debut.

Speaking after unveiling the squad, Thiaw admitted the selection process was emotionally difficult because of the fierce competition for places.

“The squad list was not easy to put together,” Thiaw said. “Naturally, with some players missing out on the World Cup, the choices can be difficult. I had my certainties.”

The Senegal coach also addressed widespread discussion surrounding former Chelsea defender Malang Sarr, who was omitted despite an impressive campaign in France.

“Regarding Malang Sarr, who has been talked about a lot lately, apart from the player himself with whom I was able to speak, I want to congratulate him personally because he has been named in the team of the season,” Thiaw explained. “I have made my choices, and I stand by them fully.”

Senegal will open their World Cup campaign with a blockbuster clash against France on June 16 before facing Erling Haaland’s Norway in a potentially decisive second group match. Their final group fixture comes against Iraq.

The squad also signals what could be the final World Cup appearance for several members of Senegal’s celebrated “golden generation,” including Mané, Koulibaly and Idrissa Gana Gueye, who helped establish the country as a continental powerhouse over the past decade.

Despite recent controversy surrounding Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco earlier this year, Thiaw’s side arrive at the World Cup carrying major expectations after strong qualification performances and a squad packed with elite-level experience across Europe’s top leagues.
