Sundowns Take Commanding First-Leg Advantage in CAF Champions League Clash

By Kazeem Ajibola Shoyebo

South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns secured a crucial first-leg advantage in the CAF Champions League after defeating Stade Malien 3–0 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, putting one foot in the semi-finals of the continental competition.

The hosts delivered a dominant performance in front of their home supporters, taking control of the tie early and maintaining their superiority throughout the match to give themselves a strong cushion ahead of the second leg in Mali.

Sundowns started the game with intensity, dictating possession and pushing their opponents deep into their own half. Their persistence paid off in the 18th minute when Brazilian forward Lucas Ribeiro broke the deadlock with a clinical finish after a swift attacking move.

The goal settled the South African champions, who continued to control the tempo of the game with their trademark fluid passing and attacking combinations.

The home side doubled their advantage shortly before halftime when striker Peter Shalulile capitalized on a defensive lapse to slot the ball past the Stade Malien goalkeeper, sending the crowd into celebration.

With a 2–0 lead at the break, Sundowns entered the second half firmly in control and determined to widen the gap.

Their dominance continued after the interval, and the third goal arrived in the 67th minute when midfielder Teboho Mokoena struck from distance, sealing an emphatic victory for the hosts.

The result gives Sundowns a commanding advantage heading into the return leg in Bamako next week, where Stade Malien will need a significant turnaround to stay alive in the tie.

Sundowns have established themselves as one of Africa’s most consistent clubs in recent seasons, regularly competing in the latter stages of the Champions League and reaching the knockout rounds again this campaign. Their strong performances earlier in the tournament included key victories that secured their place in the knockout stage.

With a three-goal cushion, the South African champions will travel to Mali with confidence as they aim to secure passage to the next round of Africa’s premier club competition.

However, Stade Malien will hope to respond strongly on home soil, knowing that overturning such a deficit will require a near-perfect performance.
