At Egypt’s pre-match press conference ahead of their third-place playoff against Nigeria, tensions rose when a Moroccan journalist questioned Hossam Hassan about criticisms of Egypt’s performance and his remarks after the team’s 1–0 loss to Senegal in the AFCON semi-final.
Coach Hassan was challenged to “admit that Egypt were technically weak and failed to reach the final” and referenced his comments about travel, conditions and scheduling. In response, Hassan sharply rebuffed the question, describing it as inappropriate and impolite for a press setting. He stated that he would not answer because he believed it lacked proper media etiquette and respect.
Hassan said: “I will not answer that question. It is not polite or respectful, and I do not consider it appropriate for this setting.”
Another journalist attempted to frame a similar question more politely, but Hassan continued to reject the line of questioning.
He maintained that questions should be posed with proper media etiquette and refused to engage on that specific line of criticism.
Throughout the exchange, Hassan appeared visibly frustrated and avoided engaging with critiques about tactical or technical reasons for Egypt’s defeat, instead focusing on other aspects of the team’s campaign and upcoming match.
