In an emotional farewell, Super Eagles vice-captain William Troost-Ekong has officially announced his retirement from international football, drawing the curtain on a remarkable journey that spanned a decade.
“Playing for Nigeria has been the greatest privilege of my life,” Troost-Ekong said in his retirement message. “The journey may end here, but my support never will. Here’s to the next chapter.”
Born in the Netherlands, Troost-Ekong made his debut for Nigeria in 2015 under the late Coach Stephen Keshi and quickly established himself as a key figure in the heart of the Super Eagles defence. He went on to earn 83 caps, participating in five major tournaments, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup and three Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaigns.
A proud leader on and off the pitch, Troost-Ekong captained Nigeria to a silver medal at AFCON 2023, where he scored crucial goals and was later named Player of the Tournament. His international medal haul also includes a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, representing Nigeria in the U23 squad.
In doing so, he became the highest-scoring defender in AFCON history, etching his name permanently into the tournament’s folklore.
“I am at peace knowing that throughout all these milestones I gave everything I had,” he said. “Not just for myself, but to try to inspire the next generation the same way I was inspired by the legends I looked up to.”
Often hailed as the final pillar of Nigeria’s famous “Oyinbo Wall” – a nickname for the central defensive pairing of Troost-Ekong and Leon Balogun – his departure marks the end of an era.
Troost-Ekong extended heartfelt thanks to his teammates, coaches, and Nigerian fans:
“Your support has carried me through every high and every challenge. I will stand with you as you stood with me.”
Though his boots are hung up for the Super Eagles, the 30-year-old defender emphasized that his commitment to Nigeria continues.
“This isn’t a final goodbye,” he added. “My work within Nigerian communities continues, just as my love and passion for this team will never fade.”
