Werder Bremen forward Victor Boniface has been ruled out of the start of the club’s New Year training sessions due to a persistent knee injury. The Nigerian international, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, is set to consult with specialist Dr. Christian Fink in Innsbruck next week to determine whether surgical intervention is necessary.
Boniface’s knee issues have been a concern throughout the season, limiting his impact at Werder Bremen. Despite making 11 Bundesliga appearances, he has yet to find the back of the net. Both Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen have reportedly agreed that surgery is the recommended course of action, though the final decision rests with the player.
Should Boniface opt for surgery, he would be sidelined for the remainder of the season and return to Leverkusen ahead of schedule. Even if he declines the procedure, Werder Bremen has indicated that he will not feature again this season due to the risk of aggravating the injury.
Boniface is currently in Nigeria but is expected to return to Germany in the coming days for further discussions with both clubs regarding his treatment and future.
As Werder Bremen prepares for their upcoming fixtures, the club is reportedly exploring options to bolster their attacking lineup in light of Boniface’s absence.
