Victor Boniface to Undergo Knee Surgery, Expected to Miss Remainder of Season

Super Eagles and Werder Bremen striker Victor Boniface is set to undergo knee surgery that will rule him out for the rest of the 2025–26 season, the German club has confirmed, in a significant blow to both his club campaign and international prospects ahead of future competitions.

Boniface, 25, who is on loan at Werder Bremen from Bayer Leverkusen, has been sidelined with a persistent knee problem that has prevented him from training and featuring for his club in recent weeks. Following consultations with club medical staff and specialists, it was agreed that a surgical intervention is necessary to address the injury.

Peter Niemeyer, Werder Bremen’s Head of Professional Football, provided an update on the situation, confirming the club and player have reached clarity on the path forward.

“We’re relieved that an agreement has now been finalized and that Victor will go ahead with the surgery,” Niemeyer said. “It brings much‑needed clarity for everyone involved.”
“Given the length of the rehabilitation, we don’t anticipate Victor featuring for Werder Bremen again this season.”

The surgery follows a period of medical examinations, including scans and specialist assessments that highlighted the severity of the knee injury. Boniface was initially sent to Austria for expert evaluation after missing training sessions at the start of the new year due to the issue.

Bremen’s confirmation that the striker will undergo surgery also implies he will not play again for the club this season,  as recovery and rehabilitation from such procedures typically span several months, extending beyond the current campaign. Reports indicate the rehabilitation period required will sideline him during crucial phases of both the domestic league and additional cup competitions.

The Nigerian international, known for his strength and attacking threat, has struggled to make an impact during his loan spell, failing to score in his 11 Bundesliga appearances this term. However, he remains contracted to Bayer Leverkusen, who will closely monitor his recovery and long‑term return to fitness once the surgery is complete.

The news comes amid mounting challenges for Bremen, who have been searching for goals and consistency in their forward line this season. Boniface’s absence compounds their attacking woes as they navigate a competitive Bundesliga campaign.
