William Troost-Ekong Completes Move to Al Ahli SC in Qatar

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has officially completed a transfer to Al Ahli Sports Club of the Qatar Stars League, leaving Saudi Arabian side Al Kholood in a move that marks the next chapter in his distinguished club career.

The 32-year-old centre-back agreed a long-term contract with Al Ahli SC that runs until June 2028, underscoring the club’s confidence in his defensive leadership and experience.

Troost-Ekong arrived at Al Ahli SC after a solid one-and-a-half-year spell with Al Kholood in the Saudi Pro League, where he was a key figure in the squad and served as team captain. During his time in Saudi Arabia, he made nearly 49 competitive appearances, offering leadership, organisation, and stability at the heart of defence.

Al Ahli SC took to social media to welcome the Nigerian defender, sharing a message along the lines of “He’s here, he’s ready — welcome to the club William. Let’s make history together.”

The defender will wear the number 5 jersey as he begins his tenure in the Qatar Stars League, a competition that has grown significantly in competitiveness and profile in recent years.

Born in Haarlem, Netherlands, and representing Nigeria at international level, Troost-Ekong has enjoyed a diverse club career across Europe and the Middle East. His professional journey has included spells in the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, England, Greece, and Saudi Arabia before this latest move to Qatar.

On the international stage, he was one of Nigeria’s most respected defenders, captaining the Super Eagles, earning over 80 caps, and featuring in multiple Africa Cup of Nations campaigns. In December 2025, Troost-Ekong announced his retirement from international football to focus on his club career.

Al Ahli SC sit in the mid-table of the Qatar Stars League and have bolstered their squad with the signing of Troost-Ekong in anticipation of strengthening their defensive setup and pursuing improved league performance. His leadership and wealth of experience are expected to be pivotal as the club targets an impactful second half of the season.
