WORLD CUP 2026: Lamine Yamal Sends Defiant Message Ahead of France Clash

Spain teenager Lamine Yamal has brushed aside criticism of his performances at the FIFA World Cup 2026, insisting he is ready to make Tuesday’s semi-final against France a memorable occasion.

The 19-year-old winger, who celebrates his birthday on the day of the blockbuster clash, suggested that doubts about his form could work in his favour.

“Everyone is saying that I’m not at my best level, so I guess you don’t expect anything from me tomorrow,” Yamal said during Spain’s pre-match media conference.

“I already know that tomorrow will be a special day.”

Yamal heads into the semi-final carrying the expectations of a nation after playing a key role in Spain’s run to the last four. Despite outside criticism, the Barcelona star has remained one of Spain’s most dangerous attacking outlets, combining pace, creativity and composure on the biggest stage.

His comments come as Spain prepare to face a France side led by Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé in one of the tournament’s most anticipated encounters. The winner will book a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final against either England or Argentina.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has repeatedly backed Yamal throughout the tournament, insisting the teenager’s biggest performances are still ahead of him. The coach has urged supporters and the media to judge the youngster over the course of his career rather than on individual matches.

The semi-final also presents Yamal with another opportunity to add to his growing reputation on the international stage. A standout performance against France would strengthen his credentials as one of world football’s brightest young stars while moving Spain one step closer to a second World Cup title.

For Yamal, however, the focus remains firmly on the team.

With his 19th birthday coinciding with one of the biggest matches of his career, the Spanish forward appears determined to let his football provide the celebration.
