Scotland Proposes National Bank Holiday to Celebrate World Cup Return

Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, has proposed designating Monday, 15 June 2026, as a national bank holiday to commemorate the men’s national football team’s first World Cup appearance since 1998. The proposal aims to allow fans to celebrate and recover following Scotland’s opening match against Haiti, scheduled for 2:00 AM UK time on Sunday, 14 June, in Boston, USA.

Mr. Swinney announced the proposal during a New Year address in Glasgow, highlighting 2026 as a significant year for Scotland, with both the World Cup participation and the Commonwealth Games returning to Glasgow. He stated, “This is a moment 28 years in the waiting – and I want as many people as possible to share the occasion.”

The proposed bank holiday would initially apply to Scottish government staff and requires formal approval through a Royal Proclamation by King Charles. The move is expected to boost national morale and has been welcomed by fans and businesses alike.

Scotland’s group stage matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup include fixtures against Morocco on 19 June and Brazil on 24 June. The national team’s qualification has generated significant excitement across the country, with supporters and pub owners advocating for extended licensing hours to accommodate late-night viewings of the matches.

The proposed bank holiday marks a historic moment for Scottish football and reflects the nation’s enthusiasm for its return to the global stage after nearly three decades.
