CAF Opens Disciplinary Probe After AFCON Quarterfinal Mayhem

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched a formal investigation into multiple incidents of misconduct during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarterfinals, condemning what it described as “unacceptable behaviour” by players, officials, and media representatives.

In a statement released via its official channels, CAF confirmed that it is reviewing match reports and video footage from two high-profile quarterfinals: Cameroon vs Morocco and Algeria vs Nigeria. The incidents, involving heated protests, confrontations with referees, and alleged misbehavior in the mixed zone, have now been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board.

“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour, especially those targeting refereeing teams or match organizers,” the statement read. “Appropriate actions will be sought against anyone whose conduct falls short of professional standards.”

Following Nigeria’s 2–0 victory over Algeria, several Algerian players and staff aggressively confronted match officials at the final whistle and in the tunnel, prompting widespread backlash. Similar tensions were reported after Morocco’s 2–0 win over Cameroon.

CAF is also examining video of alleged misconduct by members of the media, including improper conduct in the mixed zone and other restricted areas during and after the games.

While no names have been mentioned officially, those found guilty could face different penalties ranging from fines to suspensions, or tournament bans.

CAF emphasized its commitment to maintaining integrity across all its tournaments and assured fans and stakeholders that *disciplinary standards will be upheld*, regardless of status or nationality.
