Sporting CP produced an impressive second-half comeback to defeat Galatasaray 3–1 at the Estádio José Alvalade on Wednesday, overturning an early own goal to begin their 2026/27 UEFA Champions League campaign with three points.
Galatasaray took the lead after only five minutes when Sporting captain Gonçalo Inácio inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, but Geny Catamo restored parity before half-time.
Luis Suárez then put Sporting ahead from the penalty spot early in the second half before Rodrigo Zalazar sealed the comeback with a superb direct free-kick as Rui Borges’ side finished strongly.
The result gave Sporting an important opening victory in the league phase and demonstrated their ability to recover from an uncomfortable start against an experienced Galatasaray side.
The Turkish champions began the match with greater intensity and immediately put Sporting under pressure. Their persistence produced the opening goal in the fifth minute, with Inácio unable to prevent the ball from ending up in his own net following a dangerous Galatasaray attacking sequence.
Sporting gradually settled into the contest, however, and began to establish greater control. Their response arrived in the 27th minute when Geny Catamo levelled the score, giving the Portuguese champions renewed confidence before the interval.
The momentum shifted decisively after the break. Sporting became stronger in individual duels, recovered possession more effectively and began finding space in transition. Their pressure eventually resulted in a penalty when Luis Suárez was brought down inside the area.
The Colombian striker stepped up and calmly converted in the 57th minute to complete Sporting’s turnaround and put the hosts 2–1 ahead. Five minutes later, Sporting delivered the decisive blow. Rodrigo Zalazar stood over a free-kick from the left side and produced a spectacular strike, sending the ball with pace and precision into the top corner of the Galatasaray goal. The goal was one of the outstanding moments of the match and effectively ended the visitors’ hopes of recovering.
Galatasaray had more possession during parts of the closing stages but struggled to create meaningful opportunities against a Sporting defence that had become increasingly comfortable.
Sporting could even have added a fourth, with Sergi Altimira denied by goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır after being played through, while Luis Suárez had earlier gone close to scoring again on a counter-attack.
The final whistle confirmed a 3–1 victory and a strong opening to Sporting’s European campaign.
Rui Borges Praises Sporting’s Response
Sporting head coach Rui Borges acknowledged that his team struggled during the opening 20 to 25 minutes but praised the way his players responded to the setback.
“We had some difficulty matching the opponent’s intensity,” Borges said after the match, explaining that Sporting misplaced passes and were below the required standard in defensive duels.
He also admitted that the team may have been affected by some nervousness, particularly because several players were experiencing Champions League football at this level for the first time.
But the Sporting manager felt the equaliser before half-time was crucial. The team, he said, “grew and gained confidence,” while the break allowed Sporting to make tactical adjustments and improve their performance in individual battles.
Borges was particularly pleased with the second-half transformation.
“We were stronger in the individual duels, where we won many balls,” he explained, noting that Sporting subsequently created dangerous transitions and deserved their goals.
On the overall result, the manager was unequivocal: “The victory was fair for everything we were able to do.”
The Sporting coach also revealed the message delivered to his players at half-time was one of calm.
His instructions were essentially to embrace the occasion and understand that the team had earned its place in the Champions League.
“The message was one of calm and welcome to the UEFA Champions League,” Borges said, adding that Sporting gradually gained confidence while taking confidence away from Galatasaray.
“For great victories in this competition, great teams are necessary and today we were a great team,” he added.
After recovering from an early setback against Galatasaray, Sporting have made it clear that they intend to be competitive on Europe’s biggest stage once again.
