Chelle Open to Staying on as Nigeria Coach Despite AFCON Exit

By Rasheed Adewuyi, New York

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has stated that he is willing to continue as Nigeria’s national team manager after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, provided the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) remains interested in working with him.

Following Nigeria’s 4–2 penalty shootout defeat to hosts Morocco after a goalless draw, Chelle told reporters that discussions over his future would take place once the tournament concludes.

“I am still the coach of Nigeria. If nobody tells me to stop, I’m here,” he said. “After the AFCON, we will take the decision together, but the decision can’t be taken now because the tournament is not finished.”

Despite the painful loss, Chelle commended his team’s strong mentality, intense pressing, and total commitment, insisting they “gave everything on the pitch” while showing fight and discipline against a tough host nation.

“I am proud of my players but I am disappointed. We were may be the best team at this AFCON so we have to go out with pride,” the Malian-born tactician added.

Speaking about his opponents, Chelle noted that while facing North African teams is usually easier, playing against Morocco was tough and exhausting. He added that Morocco fully deserved the victory, describing them as a world-class team.

“Walid Regragui is like a big brother to me. He has shown great levels and deserved to win today’s match. I congratulate him on this victory.”

The Super Eagles will face the Pharaohs of Egypt in the third-place match on Friday, while Morocco will battle Senegal in Sunday’s final.
