Nigerian forward Esther Okoronkwo has signed a contract extension with AFC Toronto, keeping the Super Falcons star at the Northern Super League club through 2027, the Canadian Press reports.
Okoronkwo, who was instrumental in Nigeria’s 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) triumph, was named player of the match in the final after scoring and setting up goals in Nigeria’s 3–2 comeback win over Morocco.
The 28-year-old forward enjoyed a standout inaugural season with AFC Toronto, tallying eight goals and 11 assists as the club finished atop the NSL regular-season standings with a 16-6-3 record and led the league with 42 goals.
Alongside Okoronkwo, Canadian midfielder Zoe Burns and forwards Kaila Novak and Lauren Rowe also had their deals renewed. Burns’ and Rowe’s contracts run through 2027, while Novak’s extension covers the 2026 season.
According to the official club release, “We’re delighted that Esther, Lauren, Zoe, and Kaila have all committed to extending their time with AFC Toronto,” said Billy Wilson, AFC Toronto Sporting Director.
“Their commitment reinforces our belief in this group and our ambition as we continue to build toward the future.”
AFC Toronto now has 20 players under contract as it builds toward the 2026 NSL season, aiming to build on its successful debut campaign and translate regular-season success into postseason silverware.
Okoronkwo’s rise has been marked by resilience and excellence: after overcoming injury setbacks earlier in her career, she emerged as a key figure for both club and country during a breakout 2025 season.
Her commitment to AFC Toronto not only underscores her importance to the club’s attacking core but also highlights her growing stature in women’s football across North America and Africa.
