Six-Point Hit for Leicester City Over Financial Overspend — Club Plunged Into Relegation Scramble

By Kazeem Ajibola Shoyebo

Championship outfit Leicester City have been deducted six points after an independent disciplinary commission concluded the club breached the English Football League’s Profit & Sustainability regulations during the three-year cycle ending with the 2023-24 season.

The sanction, ratified by the EFL Board and applied with immediate effect, slashes Leicester’s Championship tally and leaves them 20th in the league, clinging to safety only on goal difference. The decision brings new urgency to their survival quest with fewer than half the season’s fixtures remaining.

The ruling follows a lengthy legal and regulatory process that began in May 2025, when the Premier League referred the club to an independent commission after an arbitration tribunal confirmed jurisdiction. The commission found Leicester exceeded the permitted loss limit by £20.8m, and also breached procedural requirements by failing to provide financial accounts on time.

Leicester have voiced disappointment, arguing the penalty is “disproportionate” and fails to properly acknowledge mitigating factors, including an improving financial situation and absence of aggravating circumstances. They are now assessing their options, including potential appeal.

This deduction piles pressure on a club already struggling both on and off the pitch — Leicester have not won in recent games and are without a permanent manager after parting ways with Marti Cifuentes. With relegation danger growing, every remaining match will carry heightened significance for the Foxes.
