Infantino Breaks Silence on Mexico Security Fears, Backs 2026 World Cup Hosts

By Kazeem Ajibola Shoyebo

Gianni Infantino has publicly defended Mexico’s readiness to host matches at the 2026 World Cup, insisting FIFA has full confidence in local authorities despite growing security concerns linked to cartel violence.

Speaking during recent engagements surrounding tournament preparations, the FIFA president sought to calm fears, emphasizing that no host nation is without challenges.

“We face problems in every country around the world. We don’t live in a perfect world without mistakes,” Infantino said. “We fully trust the Mexican authorities.”

His remarks come as FIFA intensifies coordination with the three co-hosts, Mexico, the United States, and Canada, ahead of the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup 2026.

Mexico is set to make history as the first nation to host World Cup matches in three separate editions, having previously staged the tournaments in 1970 and 1986. Key venues confirmed include the iconic Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey.

Security has become a major talking point in recent months following high-profile incidents of violence in parts of the country. However, FIFA has consistently maintained that preparations remain on track and that host governments are committed to delivering a safe global spectacle.

Mexican officials have also reassured football authorities that extensive security frameworks are being finalized, involving federal forces, intelligence coordination, and international cooperation.

Infantino’s strong endorsement is seen as a crucial vote of confidence in Mexico’s organizational capacity at a time when infrastructure, logistics, and fan safety planning have entered decisive phases.

The 2026 World Cup will be the largest in history, featuring 48 teams and 16 host cities across North America, with millions of fans expected to attend.

Despite the concerns, FIFA’s leadership continues to project confidence that Mexico will once again rise to the occasion and successfully host the world’s biggest football event.
