Head coach Walid Regragui and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) have formally ended their professional relationship, bringing to a close Regragui’s tenure as manager of the Morocco national football team. The agreement follows weeks of speculation over his future after Morocco’s runner-up finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
According to a detailed report from L’Équipe, Regragui and the federation have signed a mutual contract terminatio, with all necessary paperwork completed in Rabat.
Regragui who had been in charge since 2022 leaves the national team after a period marked by some of Morocco’s greatest achievements in recent history, including a historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and strong performances in African competitions.
With just three months to go before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada, the federation is moving quickly to appoint a successor. Sources indicate that former Morocco U-20 coach Mohamed Ouahbi— who led the nation’s youth side to a World Cup title in Chile — is set to take over senior team duties.
Reports also suggest that Portuguese coach João Sacramento and former Moroccan international Youssouf Hadji could join Ouahbi’s coaching staff, bringing a blend of youth success and international experience to the team.
The departure brings to an end a period of both accolade and controversy for Regragui, whose team drew praise for tactical discipline but also faced criticism following their narrow AFCON final loss to Senegal. Although the federation had previously issued statements denying speculation about his departure, the contract termination has now been formally executed.
As Morocco prepare for their World Cup campaign, drawn in Group C alongside Brazil, Scotland and Haiti, the change in leadership underscores the federation’s urgency to ensure stability and momentum in the final build-up to football’s biggest stage.
