Lamine Yamal has strongly condemned anti-Muslim chants heard during the international friendly between Spain national football team and Egypt national football team, which ended in a goalless draw on Tuesday.
The match, played amid high expectations, was overshadowed by sections of the crowd chanting phrases perceived as disrespectful toward Muslims, prompting the Barcelona star to respond publicly.
In a statement addressed to fans, Yamal made his identity and position clear:
“I am Muslim, alhamdulillah.”
He acknowledged that the chants were not necessarily directed at him personally, but stressed their broader impact.
“Yesterday in the stadium, the chant ‘the one who doesn’t boo )jump) is Muslim’ was heard. I know it was aimed at the rival team and it wasn’t something against me, but as a Muslim, it doesn’t stop being a lack of respect and something intolerable.”
On the pitch, the friendly between Spain and Egypt produced few clear-cut chances, ending 0–0 after a tightly contested encounter.
Spain dominated possession for long spells, while Egypt remained disciplined defensively, frustrating their opponents and limiting attacking opportunities. However, the events in the stands ultimately drew more attention than the football itself.
The teenager delivered a firm message to those responsible, condemning the use of religion as a tool for mockery.
“I understand that not all the fans are like that… but to those who sing these things: using a religion as a joke in a stadium makes you look like ignorant and racist people.”
His remarks reflect growing concern among players about discriminatory behavior, even during friendly matches that are meant to promote unity and sportsmanship.
Yamal emphasized that football should remain a space for inclusion and respect, not division.
“Football is for enjoying it and cheering, not for disrespecting people for who they are or what they believe in.”
Despite the incident, Yamal took time to thank supporters who backed the team positively.
“That said, thanks to the people who came to cheer us on, see you at the World Cup.”
