Aston Villa secured their place in the 2026 Europa League final after a commanding 4-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at Villa Park on Thursday night, sealing a 4-1 aggregate triumph on a memorable European night for the Midlands club.
Needing to overturn a first-leg deficit, Unai Emery’s side produced an energetic and composed performance, taking control from the opening whistle and never allowing Forest to settle into the contest.
The electric atmosphere inside Villa Park inspired a fast start from the hosts, who were rewarded early when Ollie Watkins broke through the Forest defence and finished confidently to level the aggregate score and send the home crowd into full voice.
Villa continued to attack with intensity, particularly down the flanks, and doubled their advantage before half-time. Following sustained pressure inside the penalty area, Moussa Diaby reacted quickest to a loose ball and fired home to put Villa ahead in the tie for the first time.
Forest emerged after the break determined to respond and briefly revived their hopes when Morgan Gibbs-White found space on the edge of the area before guiding a precise finish beyond the goalkeeper.
Any tension among the Villa supporters was short-lived, however, as captain John McGinn restored control almost immediately. Driving forward from midfield, McGinn unleashed a powerful strike into the net to swing momentum firmly back in Villa’s favour.
As Forest pushed men forward in search of another goal, spaces began to open at the back. Villa capitalised late on when substitute Jhon Durán finished a rapid counter-attack to complete the rout and confirm the club’s passage to the final.
At the final whistle, celebrations erupted around Villa Park as players and supporters marked one of the club’s greatest European nights in recent years. Emery, widely regarded as one of Europe’s most accomplished knockout-stage managers, applauded all four sides of the stadium after guiding Villa to another major milestone.
Aston Villa will now turn their attention to the Europa League final later this month, knowing they are just one victory away from adding another significant chapter to the club’s European history.
