Arsenal FC survived a dramatic late VAR scare to edge closer to the Premier League title with a tense 1-0 victory over West Ham United at the London Stadium on Sunday.
In a match filled with tension, controversy and title-race pressure, Leandro Trossard finally broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute before Arsenal were rescued deep into stoppage time when West Ham’s dramatic equaliser was ruled out following a lengthy VAR review.
The victory restored Arsenal’s five-point lead at the top of the table and moved Mikel Arteta’s side closer to a first Premier League crown in more than two decades.
Arsenal controlled possession for large periods of the contest but struggled to break down a disciplined West Ham side that defended in numbers and frustrated the visitors throughout much of the afternoon.
Trossard threatened early, forcing an excellent save from West Ham goalkeeper Mads Hermansen before striking the outside of the post during Arsenal’s strong opening spell.
West Ham gradually settled into the game and nearly stunned Arsenal before half-time when Taty Castellanos connected with a diving header, only for David Raya to produce a crucial save.
The second half became increasingly tense as both sides battled under enormous pressure, Arsenal chasing the title and West Ham fighting to avoid relegation.
Arteta introduced Martin Ødegaard from the bench in search of greater creativity, and the substitution eventually proved decisive.
With seven minutes remaining, Ødegaard slipped a pass into Trossard, whose strike deflected off Tomáš Souček before beating Hermansen and sparking celebrations among the travelling Arsenal supporters.
But the drama was only beginning.
Deep into stoppage time, West Ham thought they had rescued a vital point when substitute Callum Wilson bundled the ball into the net following a chaotic corner. The London Stadium erupted as players and fans celebrated what appeared to be a dramatic equaliser.
However, referee Chris Kavanagh was instructed by VAR official Darren England to review the incident after Arsenal appealed for a foul on Raya during the buildup.
Following a lengthy pitchside review, the goal was disallowed after officials ruled that West Ham substitute Pablo had fouled the Arsenal goalkeeper inside the crowded penalty area.
The decision triggered furious reactions from West Ham supporters, while Arsenal players celebrated wildly after surviving one of the season’s most dramatic VAR moments.
For West Ham, the defeat was another devastating setback in their battle against relegation, while Arsenal left east London believing the Premier League title is now firmly within reach.
