KNVB condemns racist abuse of Netherlands players after World Cup exit, vows zero tolerance

The Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) has strongly condemned the racist and discriminatory abuse directed at several Netherlands players following the team’s elimination from the FIFA World Cup, reaffirming that there is no place for racism in football or society.

In an official statement released after the Round of 32 defeat to Morocco, the Dutch federation first expressed its gratitude to the players, coaching staff and supporters for their commitment throughout the tournament.

“We would like to thank the players, coaching staff, and everyone involved for their dedication and commitment throughout this World Cup. We also extend our sincere appreciation to the supporters; those in the stadium, those watching from home, and everyone around the world who followed and supported the Netherlands. Football brings people together, regardless of origin or background,” the KNVB said.

The federation then addressed the wave of racist and discriminatory messages that surfaced online after the Netherlands’ elimination, making clear that such behaviour will not be tolerated.

“We have seen online reactions in which players have been subjected to racist and discriminatory abuse following the team’s elimination. We draw a clear line against such behaviour. Racism and discrimination have no place in football, online, or in our society.”

The statement came after Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville were targeted with racist abuse on social media following the Netherlands’ penalty shootout defeat to Morocco. Dutch media and Reuters reported that the KNVB plans to report the discriminatory messages through the Netherlands’ online discrimination reporting system, with the objective of identifying offenders and pursuing legal action where appropriate.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation across the football community and renewed calls for stronger action against online hate. Despite years of anti-racism initiatives by FIFA, UEFA and national football associations, players continue to face discriminatory abuse after major international matches.
