Falconets’ World Cup campaign starts with defeat as Spain expose Nigeria’s attacking limitations

Nigeria improved after the break but could not convert its better spell into a goal, leaving Moses Aduku’s side needing a strong response against China PR

Nigeria’s Falconets began their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Poland 2026 campaign with a 2-0 defeat to defending champions Spain at the Arena Sosnowiec on Monday, suffering an early setback in a Group F that already looks demanding.

Marisa García gave Spain the advantage in the 13th minute before Alba Cerrato added a second in the 72nd minute, punishing Nigeria as the Falconets pushed forward in search of an equaliser. The result leaves Nigeria without a point ahead of Thursday’s crucial meeting with China PR.

Spain’s early pressure set the tone

Spain demonstrated from the opening exchanges why they entered the tournament among the leading contenders.
The breakthrough came after just 13 minutes when Noemí Bejarano advanced down the flank before delivering a low ball into the Nigerian penalty area. García arrived in the right position to finish and put Spain ahead.

The early goal immediately altered the tactical demands on Nigeria. Rather than being able to sit compactly and gradually grow into the contest, the Falconets were forced to chase an equaliser against a Spanish side comfortable in possession and technically equipped to control the rhythm of the game.

Nigeria’s first recorded attempt did not arrive until the 37th minute, when Kafayat Mafisere fired wide from distance — an indication of how difficult it was for the Falconets to create clear attacking situations during the opening half. Spain consequently went into the interval with the advantage and, more importantly, with Nigeria yet to seriously test goalkeeper Laia López.

Falconets show a different side after half-time

The second half was considerably more encouraging from Nigeria. Moses Aduku’s team returned with greater attacking intent and enjoyed periods in which they pushed Spain backwards. Precious Oscar and Victory Lucky were introduced as Nigeria searched for the equaliser, while the Falconets began moving the ball forward with greater purpose. That improvement is important despite the eventual scoreline.

Nigeria did not simply collapse after conceding the opener. Instead, the team responded with a more aggressive approach and created opportunities capable of changing the game. The problem was efficiency.

Spain’s defensive organisation and goalkeeper López kept Nigeria from turning those opportunities into an equaliser. A match report from FemGol recorded Spain finishing with 21 attempts, while Nigeria continued to create until the closing stages.

The Falconets therefore had their best spell when they were already chasing the game, but could not produce the decisive final pass or finish.

Cerrato delivers the decisive blow

Nigeria’s increasing commitment to attack inevitably created spaces for Spain. That was exploited in the 72nd minute when Spain struck on the counter. Alba Cerrato, who had entered the game in the second half, finished the move to make it 2-0 and effectively remove the immediate pressure on the European champions.

The second goal was particularly damaging because it came during a period when Nigeria were attempting to turn their improved second-half performance into an equaliser. At 1-0, the Falconets remained within touching distance. At 2-0, the tactical equation changed completely.

A difficult group gets even more interesting

Nigeria’s defeat comes in a group containing Spain, China PR and New Caledonia. FIFA’s official tournament information confirms that the top two teams in each group, together with the four best third-placed teams, will advance to the Round of 16.  China made an emphatic start of their own, defeating New Caledonia 5-0 in the other Group F fixture. That result makes Nigeria’s next match particularly important.
