“The Focus Has to Be the National Team” — Jorge Jesus Turns Page on Ronaldo

Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has challenged his players to maintain their collective focus as the national team prepares to continue its Nations League campaign without Cristiano Ronaldo at the centre of the spotlight. Ronaldo’s abrupt departure from the Portugal camp has dominated the build-up to Sunday’s meeting with Norway, but Jesus has repeatedly insisted that the team must concentrate on the players available and the task immediately ahead.

Portugal have already demonstrated their ability to produce a strong performance in Ronaldo’s absence, beating Denmark 4–2 in Copenhagen after the veteran forward left the squad. The result kept Portugal perfect in the Nations League under Jesus, with three victories from three matches.

Jesus has acknowledged Ronaldo’s immense importance to Portuguese football, describing the 41-year-old as “a symbol of the Portuguese national team” and “a symbol of Portugal.” However, he has also made clear that the national team’s immediate responsibility lies with the collective rather than an individual player.

“The focus has to be on the national team, the match against Norway, what we need to do well and to be in tune with our people,” Jesus said ahead of the Norway clash. His message comes after Portugal produced one of their most impressive displays of the international break in Denmark. Without their record goalscorer and captain, the Seleção scored four times and showed the attacking quality and depth available within Jesus’ squad.

The coach has also praised the mentality of his players, with Portugal now looking to build on the momentum created by the victory in Copenhagen. A win over Norway would put them on the verge of qualification for the Nations League quarter-finals. Jesus has refused to allow the Ronaldo controversy to overshadow that objective. Asked about the possibility of the situation affecting Portugal’s preparations for the 2030 World Cup, he rejected the idea of looking so far into the future.

“Football is day by day, game by game,” Jesus said. “The game tomorrow is the most important. The problem at this moment is called Norway.”

The Portugal boss has therefore placed the emphasis on the squad currently available to him, with several players now having an opportunity to strengthen their claims for bigger roles in the national team.

Ronaldo’s legacy remains firmly recognised inside the Portugal camp. Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes also stressed on Saturday that the forward remains the greatest symbol of the national team, while insisting that there are no divisions within the squad. For Jesus, however, the immediate challenge is clear: Portugal must continue winning, regardless of the noise surrounding Ronaldo.

With the Nations League campaign moving forward and qualification within reach, the coach is demanding that his players maintain the same intensity, confidence and collective identity that produced the emphatic victory in Denmark.
