Ajax did not simply want another centre-forward this summer. They wanted a striker capable of changing the way they attack.
That explains why the Dutch giants turned to Nigerian international Tolu Arokodare, completing a season-long loan move from Wolverhampton Wanderers with an option to make the transfer permanent next summer.
Ajax Technical Director Jordi Cruijff made it clear that the signing was driven by tactical necessity rather than market opportunity.
“With Tolu, we are bringing in a striker with a profile that we did not previously have in the squad.
He is a physically strong player who has already proven himself to be a goalscorer. We are confident that he will make an important contribution to the team next season.”
At 1.97 metres tall, Arokodare offers Ajax something very different from the mobile forwards who have traditionally led the line in Amsterdam.
His aerial dominance, physical presence and penalty-box instincts were on full display during his time at Genk, where he emerged as the Belgian Pro League’s leading scorer in the 2024/25 season before earning a move to the Premier League.
His spell at Wolves proved more difficult. The Nigerian international found regular starts hard to come by during a turbulent campaign that ended with the club’s relegation from England’s top flight. Even so, he still contributed six goals in league and cup competitions.
Ajax now believe the 25-year-old can rediscover the form that made him one of Belgium’s most feared strikers.
The loan agreement provides flexibility for both clubs, while the reported purchase option gives Ajax the chance to secure Arokodare permanently if he adapts successfully to Dutch football.
For Arokodare, the move represents more than just another transfer.It is an opportunity to become the latest Nigerian striker to leave his mark in Dutch football—and perhaps the fresh start needed to reignite a career that once appeared destined for Europe’s biggest stage.
