Africa’s Heavyweights Collide: Sundowns and AS FAR to Battle for CAF Champions League Glory

By Kazeem Ajibola Shoyebo

Mamelodi Sundowns and AS FAR are set for a high-stakes showdown in the 2025/26 CAF Champions League Final, with continental glory and a record-breaking $6 million prize on the line.

CAF confirmed that the final will be played over two legs, beginning in Tshwane, South Africa, on Sunday, May 17 before concluding in Rabat, Morocco, on May 24.

The opening leg is scheduled for 16:00 local time (14:00 GMT), while the return leg in Morocco will kick off at 20:00 local time (19:00 GMT).

The final brings together two former African champions seeking to reclaim their place at the summit of continental football.

Sundowns are aiming to capture their second CAF Champions League title after their historic triumph in 2016, while AS FAR are chasing a first continental crown in 41 years, having last lifted the trophy in 1985.

For the South African giants, another title would further cement their status as one of Africa’s dominant modern clubs. AS FAR, meanwhile, are looking to complete a remarkable resurgence and restore their historic standing on the continent.

This year’s final also carries unprecedented financial significance.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe recently confirmed that the winners will receive $6 million in prize money, the highest payout in the competition’s history and a 50 percent increase on previous editions.

The move reflects CAF’s growing ambition to elevate African club football commercially and competitively.

Sundowns arrive with a reputation built on possession-based football, squad depth and continental experience. Their route to the final showcased composure and tactical maturity under pressure.

AS FAR, on the other hand, have impressed with resilience, defensive structure and efficiency in key moments, emerging as one of the tournament’s standout performers.

With history, prestige and millions at stake, the final promises a fierce battle between two clubs carrying the hopes of their nations and supporters.

For Sundowns, it is an opportunity to extend an era of dominance. For AS FAR, it is a chance to end decades of waiting and reclaim a place among Africa’s elite.

Across two cities and two decisive nights, African football will crown its new king.
