Al-Ahly Challenge FIFA Verdict in Favor of Former Coach José Riveiro

By Kazeem Ajibola Shoyebo

Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC have formally objected to a ruling issued in favor of their former head coach José Riveiro, after FIFA ordered the club to pay the Spaniard $588,000 in compensation following his dismissal.

The decision, delivered by FIFA’s Players’ Status Chamber, found in favor of Riveiro and awarded him full compensation, including a contractual penalty clause.

Riveiro was appointed in May 2025 but lasted just three months, overseeing only seven matches before the club terminated his contract amid poor results.

Although Al-Ahly initially described the separation as a “mutual agreement,” the Spanish coach contested the circumstances of his exit and filed a claim with FIFA, which ultimately ruled in his favor and ordered the Egyptian side to pay compensation.

The compensation totals $588,000, which includes salary obligations and a three-month contractual penalty clause.

In response, Al-Ahly confirmed they will appeal the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), football’s highest legal authority.

The club’s legal adviser, Dr. Abdullah Shehata, said “The club will file an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).  The ruling is not final, and there are further levels of litigation.”

He added that the appeal will be filed within three weeks after the club receives the full written explanation behind FIFA’s ruling.

The dispute now enters a critical phase, with CAS set to determine whether FIFA’s decision stands or is overturned.

Despite the verdict, Al-Ahly remain confident in their legal position and insist the matter is far from settled.
