Spanish football icon Andrés Iniesta has officially begun a new chapter in his legendary career after being appointed head coach of UAE First Division side Gulf United FC.
The former Barcelona and Spain midfielder takes charge of the Dubai-based club in what will be his first managerial role since retiring from professional football, marking the start of his transition from one of the game’s most decorated players to the dugout.
Gulf United confirmed Iniesta’s appointment as part of the club’s long-term sporting project focused on youth development, player progression and building a modern football identity within the United Arab Emirates’ second-tier league structure.
The 42-year-old joins a club widely recognised for its emphasis on nurturing young talent and creating pathways for emerging players in the Gulf region.
Iniesta retired from professional football in 2025 after concluding his playing career in the Middle East, where he spent time with Emirates Club following his departure from Japanese side Vissel Kobe.
Regarded as one of the greatest midfielders in football history, Iniesta enjoyed a glittering career with Barcelona, winning nine La Liga titles, four UEFA Champions League trophies and multiple domestic honours during an era that transformed modern football.
Internationally, he became immortalised in Spanish football history after scoring the winning goal in the 2010 FIFA World Cup final against the Netherlands, securing Spain’s first-ever World Cup title.
His appointment at Gulf United represents one of the most high-profile managerial arrivals in the UAE’s lower divisions and immediately places global attention on the ambitious Dubai club.

Sources close to the project indicate Iniesta was attracted by the club’s developmental philosophy, modern infrastructure and opportunity to work closely with young players at the beginning of his coaching career.
The move also continues the growing influence of high-profile European football figures within the Gulf region as Middle Eastern clubs increasingly invest in football development, infrastructure and international visibility.
While Gulf United currently compete outside the UAE Pro League, the club has openly expressed ambitions of climbing the football pyramid and establishing itself as a recognised developmental force in the region.
Iniesta is expected to bring a possession-based football philosophy heavily influenced by the Barcelona methodology that shaped his own career under coaches such as Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique and Vicente del Bosque.
The Spaniard now faces the challenge of translating his extraordinary understanding of the game into management — a transition many football legends have attempted with mixed results.
However, Gulf United believe Iniesta’s leadership qualities, football intelligence and global experience can help accelerate both the club’s sporting vision and the development of its young squad.
