Arsenal Stand Alone: Gunners Grind Past Sporting to Become Last EPL Hope in Europe

By Rasheed Adewuyi, New York

Arsenal FC are now the last Premier League side standing in the UEFA Champions League after a tense 0–0 draw against Sporting CP sealed a narrow 1–0 aggregate victory and a place in the semi-finals.

At a nervy Emirates Stadium, Mikel Arteta’s side did just enough, leaning on their first-leg advantage in Lisbon, where Kai Havertz struck late to give them the decisive edge in the tie.

The second leg, however, was far from convincing.

Arsenal dominated possession early but struggled to break down a disciplined Sporting side. Chances were scarce, and the tension inside the stadium grew as the game wore on. Sporting came closest to scoring before halftime when Geny Catamo rattled the post, a warning sign that the tie was still very much alive.

Despite their attacking struggles, registering limited shots on target, Arsenal’s defensive resilience proved decisive. The Gunners held firm under late pressure, with David Raya and the backline ensuring a crucial clean sheet to see them through.

Sporting pushed in the closing stages but lacked the cutting edge to force extra time, while Arsenal themselves nearly snatched a late winner, with efforts striking the woodwork in a cagey finish.

At the final whistle, relief swept across North London. It was not a performance to inspire fear across Europe, but it was enough.

The result sends Arsenal into the Champions League semi-finals for the second consecutive season, a historic milestone for the club, and sets up a high-stakes clash with Atlético Madrid.

More significantly, it leaves Arsenal carrying the hopes of English football alone in Europe’s elite competition.

In a tournament defined by fine margins, Arteta’s men showed that grit can matter just as much as flair. The question now is whether resilience alone will be enough as the stakes rise—and the opposition gets tougher.
