Björkegren Named Interim Black Stars Coach for Somalia Double-Header

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed Kim Lars Björkegren as interim head coach of the Black Stars for their November 2026 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Somalia, as the search for a permanent successor continues.

The appointment was confirmed on October 16 in a joint announcement by the GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, and the Black Stars Coach Search Committee.

Björkegren will work alongside Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram as assistant coaches, while former Ghana international goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda has been appointed goalkeepers’ coach. Additional technical and support staff will be assigned ahead of the November international window.

The interim arrangement follows the committee’s recommendation after reviewing coaching candidates. It is intended to provide continuity and allow Ghana to prepare for the Somalia fixtures without rushing the recruitment of a substantive head coach.

The GFA confirmed that the temporary appointment applies specifically to the November fixtures, while the search committee continues its work.

Björkegren, who also coaches Ghana’s women’s national team, the Black Queens, will now take charge of the senior men’s side for the crucial qualifying assignment.

The Black Stars are seeking to revive their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign after losing their opening two Group C matches against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia. The double-header against Somalia presents Ghana with an opportunity to recover ground in the race for qualification.

The GFA, the Sports Ministry and the search committee have called on Ghanaians to support the interim technical team as preparations begin for the November matches.
