Carney Chukwuemeka Named in Austria Squad for World Cup Friendlies, Eyes 2026 North America Debut

Carney Chukwuemeka has been officially included in the Austria national football team squad for upcoming international friendlies, setting the stage for his potential debut ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The announcement comes shortly after FIFA approved his switch of international allegiance from England to Austria.

The 22‑year‑old Borussia Dortmund midfielder, born in Vienna to Nigerian parents, has previously represented England national youth football teams at various age groups but never featured for the senior side. His eligibility for Austria was confirmed when FIFA ratified his change of association earlier this month, clearing the way for him to represent the country of his birth.

According to reports, Chukwuemeka has been named in Austria’s squad for friendly matches against Ghana national football team on 27 March and South Korea national football team on 31 March both seen as opportunities for him and fellow switch‑international Paul Wanner to showcase their credentials to coach Ralf Rangnick ahead of the World Cup.

Austria secured qualification for their first World Cup since 1998, ending a long absence from football’s showpiece tournament. They have been drawn into Group J alongside defending champions Argentina national football team, Algeria national football team and Jordan national football team.

National team manager Rangnick has made strengthening Austria’s midfield a priority as his side prepares for a challenging group stage in June. Integrating Chukwuemeka immediately into the squad reflects the coach’s belief that the technically gifted midfielder could play a significant role if he impresses in the warm‑up matches.

Chukwuemeka’s inclusion is noteworthy not just for what it means on the pitch, but also for its timing, coming just months before Austria embarks on its World Cup campaign across the United States, Mexico and Canada.
