Algerian Court Hands Rulani Mokwena Suspended Sentence Over Airport Cash Incident

According to reports from journalists Velile Mnyandu and Nazim Bessol, the court ordered the confiscation of the €14,200 and imposed a 50,000 Algerian dinar fine (approximately €200) for breaching the country’s strict foreign-currency declaration laws.

The case unfolded shortly after Mokwena’s departure from Algerian club MC Alger, where he had been working before seeking to leave the country. Algerian regulations require travelers to declare foreign currency above a specified threshold when exiting the country.

Despite the conviction, the suspended sentence means the 38-year-old will not serve jail time unless he commits another offense, allowing him to continue his professional commitments.

Reports indicate Mokwena is expected to proceed with plans to begin a new managerial chapter with Libyan giants Al‑Ittihad Tripoli, bringing an end to a brief but turbulent episode in Algeria.

The incident represents an unexpected legal setback for one of Africa’s most prominent young coaches, whose career has included high-profile roles in Southern African football and growing recognition across the continent.
