Como Humiliate Manchester United 4–1 as Carrick Faces Mounting Pressure

Manchester United suffered a humiliating 4–1 defeat to Champions League debutants Como on Wednesday, October 21, as Cesc Fàbregas’s side delivered a statement victory at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia and intensified scrutiny of manager Michael Carrick.

Argentina international Nico Paz scored twice and provided an assist as Como outclassed the English side in their third league-phase fixture. Tasos Douvikas and Jacobo Ramón also scored for the hosts, while Joshua Zirkzee netted a late consolation for United.

Como made an explosive start, with Paz curling home the opening goal in the second minute after United afforded him too much space. Despite opportunities to respond, the visitors struggled to contain the hosts’ movement and attacking intensity.

The Italian side extended their advantage four minutes into the second half when Paz played Douvikas through to score in the 49th minute. Paz then capitalised on a costly Carlos Baleba error to complete his brace in the 57th minute, leaving United facing an uphill battle.

Ramón added Como’s fourth in the 76th minute, heading home after another well-worked attacking move. Zirkzee scored in stoppage time following a cross from Amad Diallo, but the late goal did little to disguise United’s defensive shortcomings.

The result represents a landmark European victory for Como, who are making their debut in the Champions League. The club’s rise to the competition’s elite contrasts sharply with United’s struggles, with the visitors unable to match their opponents’ organisation, energy and precision.

The defeat also deepened the pressure on Carrick, whose side entered the match amid a prolonged winless run. United’s defensive lapses and inability to impose themselves on the game raised fresh questions about their tactical approach and consistency.

Como’s achievement evokes memories of previous European upsets involving established continental heavyweights. In August 2016, European debutants Sassuolo defeated former European champions Red Star Belgrade 3–0 in a Europa League play-off first leg. Derby County had also beaten Benfica 3–0 in the first leg of their European Cup second-round tie in October 1972.

Although the historical results differ in scoreline and competition, Como’s emphatic victory adds another striking chapter to the history of European newcomers challenging clubs with far greater continental pedigrees.

For Manchester United, however, the immediate concern is recovery. After another damaging performance, Carrick and his players must respond quickly if they are to restore confidence and keep their Champions League campaign on track.
