Flamingos Beat Mexico to Reach U-17 Women’s World Cup Quarter-Finals

Nigeria’s Flamingos defeated Mexico 2–1 in the Round of 16 on Thursday to advance to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, with goals from Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan securing their place in the last eight.

Umejiaku opened the scoring in the 40th minute, while Dunstan doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 71st minute. Mexico mounted a late challenge through Emily Delgado’s goal deep into stoppage time, but the Nigerian side held on to seal qualification.

The victory at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé extended Nigeria’s campaign after their impressive 3–1 group-stage win over defending champions Korea DPR.

Umejiaku broke the deadlock after Nigeria had pressed for an opener, giving the Flamingos the advantage heading into half-time. The team maintained its lead after the restart before Dunstan struck in the second half to put Nigeria in control.

Mexico refused to surrender and found the net through Delgado in the 90th minute of added time. Her late effort made for a tense finish, but Nigeria protected their advantage to complete the victory.

The result continues Nigeria’s pursuit of another deep run at the tournament. The Flamingos won bronze at the 2022 edition in India after reaching the semi-finals, and their latest victory keeps hopes of another last-four appearance alive.

Nigeria will next face Venezuela in the quarter-finals on Sunday, November 1, at the Mohammed VI Football Academy, Pitch 4, in Salé. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nigerian time.

Venezuela booked their place in the last eight by defeating Germany 1–0, with Diana Bravo scoring in the fifth minute. The South Americans’ victory over the European side underlines the challenge awaiting Nigeria as the tournament moves into its decisive stage.

The Flamingos must now recover and prepare for another knockout contest, with a semi-final place at stake.
