Flamingos Pay Price for Costly Errors as Poland Hand Nigeria Opening Defeat

Nigeria’s Flamingos must recover quickly from a frustrating start to the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after Poland inflicted a 2-1 defeat on the Nigerian youngsters in their opening Group B encounter in Morocco.

Two costly defensive lapses proved decisive as Poland struck through Wiktoria Skrzypczak and Natalia Skrok before Oluebube Umejiaku’s late goal gave Nigeria a glimmer of hope that ultimately came too late.

The defeat leaves head coach Akeem Busari and his players under immediate pressure, with their next fixture against Puerto Rico carrying added significance in the race for a place in the knockout stage.

Poland took the lead in the 33rd minute when Skrzypczak converted a penalty. Nigeria struggled to turn their promising moments into a breakthrough and went into the interval facing the challenge of overturning the deficit.

The Polish side tightened its grip on the contest in the 65th minute. Blanka Zając’s long pass exposed Nigeria’s defensive vulnerability, allowing Skrok to double the advantage and leave the Flamingos with a difficult mountain to climb.

Nigeria responded with greater urgency, and their persistence finally paid off in the 79th minute. Kanyinsola Yusuf delivered a free-kick into the danger area, where substitute Umejiaku supplied the decisive touch to cut Poland’s lead to 2-1.

The goal injected fresh belief into Nigeria’s late push, but Poland resisted the pressure to protect their advantage and claim all three points. A Nigerian appeal for a penalty following an incident involving Oluwakemi Adegbuyi also came to nothing after a video review.

For the Flamingos, the result was a painful reminder that opportunities must be converted and defensive mistakes punished ruthlessly at a tournament of this level. While the late response offered some encouragement, Nigeria’s earlier errors left them with too much to do.

The challenge now is to prevent one defeat from defining their entire campaign. Nigeria face Puerto Rico on Tuesday, October 20, before meeting defending champions Korea DPR in their final group fixture on October 23.

Korea DPR opened their campaign with a commanding 6-0 victory over Puerto Rico, making Nigeria’s response in their next match even more important.

The Flamingos have little room for another costly performance. Improved defensive organisation, sharper finishing and greater composure in key moments will be essential if Nigeria are to revive their qualification hopes.

The opening setback has put Nigeria on the back foot, but the team still has an opportunity to respond. Against Puerto Rico, the Flamingos must turn urgency into results.
