Fred Rutten has stepped down as head coach of the Curaçao national football team following internal discussions within the country’s football federation, the Federashon Futbòl Kòrsou (FFK) announced.
The federation confirmed that Rutten’s resignation came after what it described as “constructive discussions” involving the leadership of the national team setup ahead of important upcoming fixtures.
According to the FFK, Rutten himself was not the direct subject of the discussions. However, the Dutch coach chose to resign in order to prevent tension from affecting the working environment within the squad and technical staff.
“There must not be a climate that harms healthy professional relationships within the team or staff,” Rutten said in a statement released by the federation.
“That is why stepping down is the right decision. Time is pressing and Curaçao must move forward. I regret how things unfolded, but I wish everyone the best.”
The federation praised Rutten for prioritising the interests of the national team above personal considerations, describing his decision as one made with professionalism and responsibility.
FFK officials also acknowledged Rutten’s leadership and contribution to the continued development of football in Curaçao during his time in charge.
The federation said its executive board would decide on the next steps regarding the coaching position while maintaining focus on stability around the national team.
“Our focus now is preserving calm within the group and continuing to build toward Curaçao’s sporting ambitions,” the federation stated.
Rutten’s departure comes at a crucial period for Curaçao as the national team continues preparations for upcoming international competitions and qualification campaigns.
