Leeds Fight Back To Leave Tottenham’s Survival Bid Hanging

By Rasheed Adewuyi, New York

Leeds United FC fought back to earn a crucial 1-1 draw against struggling Tottenham Hotspur FC, leaving Spurs’ Premier League survival hopes hanging dangerously in the balance with only two matches remaining.

Tottenham looked set for a massive victory in the relegation battle after Mathys Tel fired the hosts ahead early in the second half, but Leeds responded through a penalty converted by Dominic Calvert-Lewin to silence the home crowd and snatch a vital point.

The result leaves Tottenham still nervously looking over their shoulders near the relegation zone after missing the opportunity to move four points clear of danger.

The first half was tense and cautious as both teams struggled to create clear openings amid the pressure surrounding the relegation battle.

However, the match came alive shortly after the restart when Tel produced a moment of brilliance in the 50th minute, curling a superb strike beyond the goalkeeper to spark celebrations inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The goal appeared to settle Spurs and ease tensions among the supporters, but Leeds gradually grew into the game as Tottenham retreated deeper into their own half.

The turning point arrived in the 74th minute after a lengthy VAR review. Tel, attempting an acrobatic clearance inside his own penalty area, caught Ethan Ampadu in the head, prompting referee Jarred Gillett to award Leeds a penalty.

Calvert-Lewin stepped forward confidently and converted from the spot despite the goalkeeper diving the right way, bringing Leeds level and dramatically shifting the momentum of the contest.

Leeds nearly snatched all three points deep into stoppage time when Sean Longstaff forced a superb save from Tottenham goalkeeper Antonín Kinský, whose late intervention prevented an even more devastating result for the hosts.

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi admitted after the match that his side struggled to cope with the pressure following their opening goal.

Meanwhile, Leeds boss Daniel Farke praised his players’ resilience and determination after another spirited away performance.

The draw extends Leeds’ encouraging unbeaten run, while Tottenham remain trapped in a tense relegation fight heading into difficult upcoming fixtures against Chelsea and Everton.
