From Boycott to Takeoff: Super Eagles Fly to Marrakech After Bonus Breakthrough

The Nigeria Super Eagles have checked out of their team hotel in Fez and are en route to the airport for their flight to Marrakech, where they will be based ahead of Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations 2025 quarter‑final clash against Algeria.

The move comes amid ongoing tension in the camp over unpaid AFCON match bonuses, but officials have indicated that progress has been made in resolving the dispute that threatened to disrupt preparations.

Sources say the decision to travel was reached after “constructive talks” involving players, the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), during which agreements were made that all outstanding match bonuses are now in the payment pipeline. The delays have been attributed to required Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) clearance and routine banking procedures, rather than a lack of funds or unwillingness to pay.

Team officials also reassured players that all approved match bonuses from Nigeria’s four victories – against Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda and Mozambique – remain fully secured and will be paid once the necessary administrative processes are completed.

Despite earlier reports that the squad had threatened to boycott training and travel to Marrakech over the unpaid bonuses, the team ultimately checked out of Fez and began their journey to Marrakech, signaling a resolution sufficient to allow preparations to continue.

The Super Eagles have scheduled an evening training session today at 6:00 p.m. in Marrakech as part of their final preparations for the highly anticipated quarter‑final encounter with Algeria.
