Cody Gakpo is set to remain at Liverpool after Manchester City’s late attempt to sign the Netherlands international collapsed, with the Premier League champions rejecting an offer worth £75 million plus £5 million in add-ons.
According to David Ornstein, direct communication between all parties has confirmed that City’s pursuit of the Liverpool forward is now over. Gakpo will therefore continue at Anfield despite the late approach from Pep Guardiola’s side.
Liverpool’s decision comes after the club completed the signing of France international Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth up to £123 million. However, the Reds ultimately opted against allowing Gakpo to leave, with insufficient time remaining in the transfer window to secure an adequate replacement.
Gakpo has already made an impact for Liverpool this season, scoring in the club’s 2-2 Premier League draw at Newcastle United before being voted the supporters’ Player of the Match. He also scored in Liverpool’s final pre-season victory over Como.
With the Gakpo deal now off, Manchester City have turned their attention towards Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández, with negotiations reportedly being explored as the transfer deadline approaches. Chelsea are understood to value the Argentina international at around £120 million.
The collapse of the Gakpo move represents a significant late-window decision for Liverpool, who have chosen to retain the Dutch forward despite City’s willingness to commit a substantial fee.
