The Super Eagles of Nigeria commenced their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Tanzania in their Group C opener at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, Morocco. Goals from Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman, both assisted by Alex Iwobi, secured the win for Nigeria.

Nigeria dominated the early proceedings, showcasing confident possession and pressing high up the pitch. Their efforts paid off in the 36th minute when defender Semi Ajayi headed home a precise cross from Alex Iwobi, giving the Super Eagles a deserved lead.

Tanzania came out with renewed vigor after the break and found an equalizer in the 50th minute through Charles M’Mombwa, who finished off a well-orchestrated team move . However, Nigeria responded almost immediately. Just two minutes later, Ademola Lookman restored Nigeria’s lead with a composed finish, again assisted by Iwobi, marking his second assist of the match .
Despite creating several opportunities, Nigeria was unable to extend their lead, with Akor Adams hitting the woodwork and Victor Osimhen having a shot cleared off the line.
The victory places Nigeria at the top of Group C, providing a positive start to their AFCON 2025 journey. They will face Tunisia in their next group match on December 27. Tanzania, still seeking their first-ever AFCON win, will look to bounce back against Uganda in their upcoming fixture.
