England captain misses penalty in his first appearance since winning football’s biggest individual award but sets up Upamecano’s goal as Fábio Silva’s 89th-minute strike rescues a 2-2 draw for Borussia Dortmund.
Harry Kane endured a night of contrasting fortunes as Bayern Munich were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by Borussia Dortmund in Saturday’s Der Klassiker at the Allianz Arena.
Playing his first match since being crowned the 2026 Ballon d’Or winner, the England international was honoured before kick-off as Bayern celebrated his individual achievement. However, the occasion produced a frustrating evening for the striker, who missed a second-half penalty before redeeming himself with an important assist.
Bayern made the brighter start, dominating possession and creating several opportunities against Dortmund, who initially adopted a cautious defensive approach.
Michael Olise came close to opening the scoring in the 10th minute, striking the woodwork, while Dortmund thought they had taken the lead through Jobe Bellingham in the 34th minute. However, VAR disallowed the effort after Carney Chukwuemeka was adjudged to have fouled goalkeeper Jonas Urbig in the build-up.
Bayern eventually broke the deadlock in the 38th minute when Konrad Laimer capitalised on a pass from Olise, converting his rebound after Gregor Kobel had saved his initial attempt.
The hosts continued to press after the interval and were awarded a penalty in the 56th minute when Felix Nmecha handled Kane’s effort inside the area.
Kane stepped forward to take responsibility but sent his spot-kick against the crossbar, missing an opportunity to double Bayern’s advantage.
Dortmund immediately capitalised on the reprieve, restoring parity in the 60th minute through Serhou Guirassy, who finished a well-worked move after receiving a pass from Chukwuemeka.
The visitors’ celebrations were short-lived, however, as Bayern regained the lead six minutes later.
Joshua Kimmich delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area, and Kane produced an intelligent headed pass across goal for Dayot Upamecano to finish from close range and make it 2-1.
Kane subsequently went close to getting his name on the scoresheet, striking the post in the 75th minute, but Dortmund refused to surrender.
Their persistence eventually paid off in the 89th minute when substitute Fábio Silva collected the ball following a disrupted Bayern clearance and fired a low finish beyond Urbig to restore parity.
Bayern nearly snatched victory in stoppage time, but Lennart Karl’s effort struck the crossbar as the encounter ended 2-2.
Despite failing to score, Kane’s contribution remained significant. According to Bundesliga statistics, his penalty miss was only the second unsuccessful attempt in his 27 Bundesliga penalties, underlining his otherwise impressive record from the spot.
The result also preserved both clubs’ unbeaten starts to the Bundesliga season, leaving them level on 18 points after eight matches, with Bayern retaining top position on goal difference.
Konrad Laimer was named Man of the Match after opening the scoring and delivering an influential performance for the Bavarians.
The encounter also proved physically demanding for Bayern, who suffered injury setbacks involving Ismael Saibari, Serge Gnabry and Michael Olise.
Head coach Vincent Kompany was absent from the touchline as he continued recovering from illness, with assistant coach Aaron Danks overseeing the team.
For Dortmund, Fábio Silva’s late intervention ensured they left Munich with a valuable point, while Bayern were left to reflect on missed opportunities in a contest that could have significantly strengthened their position at the top of the table.
Kane’s Ballon d’Or celebrations may have provided the night’s pre-match spectacle, but Dortmund’s late resistance ensured the biggest talking point at the Allianz Arena was the dramatic finish.
