Ademola Lookman has praised Atlético Madrid’s commanding 5–2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur F.C., describing the performance as a clear demonstration of the squad’s unity, intensity and determination.
Speaking after the high-scoring encounter in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash, the Nigerian forward said the team’s approach and work rate from the opening whistle laid the foundation for the emphatic result.
“It was a very good night for us,” Lookman said. “The team worked incredibly hard and you could see the hunger from the first minute.”
Atlético’s aggressive start proved decisive as the Spanish side quickly put Tottenham under sustained pressure, forcing defensive mistakes and creating early chances that helped them seize control of the match.
According to Lookman, the players executed the manager’s tactical plan perfectly from the outset.
“We started with intensity and belief,” he explained. “When you begin a game like that, it gives the whole team confidence.”
The winger also highlighted the collective nature of the victory, praising his teammates for their discipline and teamwork throughout the encounter.
“Everybody was top today,” Lookman added. “From the defenders to the attackers, everyone played their role and that’s why we got the result we wanted.”
Although he did not get on the scoresheet, Lookman stressed that contributing to the overall team performance was just as important as scoring goals.
“Football is about the team,” he said. “If the team wins and performs well, that’s what matters most. Pressing defenders, creating space and helping teammates are all part of the job.”
Despite the comfortable margin, Lookman admitted the match was far from straightforward, noting that Tottenham remained a dangerous opponent throughout the contest.
“Tottenham are a very good team,” he said. “We respected them and stayed concentrated because games can change very quickly.”
Looking ahead, the Nigerian international insisted the team must maintain their focus and momentum following such a strong performance.
“It’s a great result, but the job is not finished,” Lookman said. “We have to keep working hard and continue performing at this level.”
Lookman also spoke about settling into life at Atlético since his arrival in Spain, crediting the welcoming atmosphere in the dressing room for helping him adapt quickly.
“My teammates have been amazing since I arrived,” he said. “They made it easy for me to settle and enjoy my football.”
