Manchester City Step Up Pursuit of Gakpo as Liverpool Consider £85m Sale

Manchester City have intensified their pursuit of Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, with reports indicating that the Premier League champions are prepared to make a major move for the Netherlands international before the transfer window closes.

The latest reports suggest City have made a substantial offer for the 27-year-old, with the figure being reported at around £85 million. Liverpool are understood to be open to negotiations, particularly after completing the signing of Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola in a deal that could reach £123 million.

Gakpo has reportedly indicated a preference for a move to Manchester City, while Tottenham had previously emerged as another serious contender for his signature. The situation has developed rapidly with the transfer deadline approaching.

The Dutch forward has made an encouraging start to the new Premier League campaign, registering one goal and one assist in Liverpool’s opening two matches. He has also played a significant role during his three-and-a-half-year spell at Anfield, scoring 51 goals and contributing to Liverpool’s 2024/25 Premier League title triumph.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has publicly urged the club to retain Gakpo, describing him as a quality player who remains important to the squad.

“I think we should keep quality players,” Van Dijk said, while acknowledging that the final decision would depend on what happens during the remaining days of the window.

A potential move to City would represent a major Premier League transfer and would give Pep Guardiola’s side another versatile attacking option capable of operating from the left flank, centrally or in a supporting role around Erling Haaland.

For Liverpool, however, selling Gakpo to a direct domestic rival would be a significant decision. The arrival of Barcola has created additional competition in attack, but Gakpo’s recent form and versatility mean his departure would still represent a considerable loss of attacking depth.
