Real Sociedad are Copa del Rey champions once again after defeating Atlético Madrid in a dramatic penalty shootout, sealing a 4–3 victory following a pulsating 2–2 draw after extra time in Seville.
Goalkeeper Unai Marrero emerged as the decisive figure, saving two penalties in the shootout to secure the Basque side’s triumph and cap a memorable night at La Cartuja.
The victory marks Real Sociedad’s return to the summit of Spanish cup football, claiming their fourth Copa del Rey title and their first since the 2019/20 campaign. The final also echoed historic precedent, mirroring their 1987 triumph over Atlético, which was likewise decided on penalties.
The match itself delivered high drama from the outset. Sociedad struck inside the opening seconds through Ander Barrenetxea, registering one of the fastest goals in Copa del Rey final history. Atlético responded through Ademola Lookman before captain Mikel Oyarzabal restored Sociedad’s lead from the penalty spot before halftime.
Atlético, led by Diego Simeone, rallied again in the second half, with Julián Álvarez producing a late equalizer to force extra time. However, neither side could find a winner in the additional 30 minutes, sending the contest to penalties.
In the shootout, Marrero denied key efforts, including strikes from Alexander Sørloth and Álvarez, before substitute Pablo Marín converted the decisive kick to hand Sociedad the trophy.
Beyond the result, the defeat extends Atlético Madrid’s wait for silverware, with their last major trophy still dating back to 2021. For Sociedad, meanwhile, the triumph underlines a resurgence, delivering silverware in front of fans after their previous title was won behind closed doors during the pandemic era.
From a lightning-fast opener to shootout heartbreak, the 2026 final will be remembered as one of the most gripping in recent Copa del Rey history, defined ultimately by Marrero’s composure and Sociedad’s resilience when it mattered most.
