Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi believes his side were deserved winners after eliminating the Netherlands from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the Atlas Lions controlled virtually every aspect of a dramatic Round of 32 contest that ended in a penalty shootout victory.
Speaking after Morocco’s memorable triumph, Ouahbi praised his players for executing the game plan to perfection and highlighted their dominance in possession and chance creation against one of Europe’s traditional football powers.
“It is a fully deserved victory in every sense of the word. I think we completely controlled the match. I don’t think they are used to playing with only 30% possession, while we reached 70%. We created far more chances and had many more shots.”
His assessment reflected the overall pattern of the match, with Morocco dictating long spells of possession and repeatedly testing Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen before finally finding a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser through Issa Diop. The Atlas Lions then held their nerve in a tense penalty shootout to secure a place in the Round of 16, where they will face co-hosts Canada.
Ouahbi also admitted he was surprised by the Netherlands’ conservative tactical approach, suggesting Morocco’s growing reputation on the international stage may have influenced Ronald Koeman’s game plan. Following the victory, Koeman himself defended deploying a more defensive system, insisting it was designed to limit Morocco’s attacking threat despite widespread criticism in the Dutch media.
The victory extends Morocco’s remarkable rise on the world stage following their historic semi-final run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Under Ouahbi, the Atlas Lions have continued to impress with an aggressive possession-based style while maintaining the defensive resilience that has become their trademark.
With confidence growing and belief spreading throughout the squad, Morocco now head into the Round of 16 dreaming of another deep World Cup run—and, perhaps, another chapter of African football history.
